Design Brief and Overview
- Project Context: Flance is an ongoing mobile application redesign that streamlines freelance business operations through three integrated features: project management, invoice generation, and financial bookkeeping. Originally launched as “Frenlance” in Vietnam’s market in 2022, the project went on hiatus before resuming in October 2024 with renewed focus on contemporary freelancer needs.
- Strategic Goal: Redesigning the project management feature’s information architecture and design system over 8 weeks, creating a scalable foundation for the app’s evolution.
Deliverables (in progress)
- Refreshed art direction aligning with current design trends
- Restructured information architecture for improved task flow
- Component-based design system with 15+ mobile-optimized elements
- Interactive prototype of the complete project management feature
Challenges
- Market Evolution: The freelance landscape has shifted significantly since 2022. I’m investigating how young Vietnamese freelancers currently manage projects, validating whether our original assumptions still hold, and identifying new pain points that emerged with remote work normalization.
- Information Density vs. Mobile Constraints: Early iterations displayed all project data with equal prominence, creating cognitive overload on small screens. Finding the balance between comprehensive information and scannable interfaces remains an ongoing challenge.
Problem Solving
- Two-Format Display Strategy: Developing a hybrid approach where active projects (typically 3-5) display as detailed cards in a horizontal carousel, while completed projects appear in a space-efficient vertical list. This reflects how users mentally categorize “current focus” versus “archived reference.”
- Progressive Disclosure System: Implementing expandable insight cards that transform metrics into actionable items. A card showing “2 overdue” expands to reveal specific projects requiring immediate attention, reducing dashboard overwhelm while maintaining quick access to details.
- Accordion-Based Detail Views: Organizing project information into three collapsible sections—Project Details, Client Information, and Payment Overview. This allows users to focus on relevant information without endless scrolling, particularly crucial for complex projects with extensive deliverables.
Current Progress
- Completed 15+ components with consistent visual language and interaction patterns
- Reduced information overload through strategic content hierarchy
- Established scalable design system ready for remaining app features
- Created flexible framework accommodating 5-50+ simultaneous projects
